About H.M. Blankinship

The winner of the Virginia State Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship receives the H.M. “Bunny” Blankinship Trophy, which honors Blankinship for his contributions to the growth and development of the VSGA in the years after World War II.

Crowning Moment…

In 1962, Bunny Blankinship – known as “Mr. Golf” in Virginia – became the VSGA’s first Executive Secretary, a precursor to the full-time professional position of Executive Director.

Accomplishments and Awards

  • A member of Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg, Blankinship served as the eighth president of the VSGA’s all-volunteer board of directors in 1959-60
  • Held the position of VSGA Executive Secretary for 10 years (1962-72)
  • The Executive Secretary was the precursor position to the full-time, paid staff title of Executive Director. Blankinship’s responsibilities included conducting all VSGA tournaments; paying bills and collecting club dues; assembling pictures, articles and ads for the VSGA Annual publication; among numerous other duties
  • The Fox Puss Invitational at Boonsboro was named to honor Blankinship (Fox) and clubmate Charles Hancock (Puss). It began in 1971 and remains one of Virginia’s most popular events today
